Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:22
Let us begin with this message from a Christian writer, “Take some time to reflect on your desires. As you sort through them, moving from accessible surface desires to the deeper longings that lie beneath them, submit everything you discover to God in prayer. Ask God to reorder your desires by aligning it with the desires of God’s own heart.” Cravings have a very strong force. It is a yearning within man that has such an enormous force that it is only God that can control it to fall in shape. Child of God what our hearts yearn for, what we often desire if not subjected to God’s control can be very much disastrous. It can lead us to where we did not bargain for. The writer tries to point out the trending of our cravings from surface desires to deeper longings. All these must be brought before God, unless that is done, we will end up making demands that would leave everyone surprised about us. Sometimes, you imaging why you crave over particular things as you do. That is how it really is; the desire of man can ball out of control; it can tend so wild and ungenerous. We must therefore surrender what we crave in the hands of God. Man’s crave for power, possession and pleasure always pushes themselves out of control. Our cravings want to have its way at all cost. Eve, had a craving and this craving was dangerous because it was not just a surface desire, it was a deeper longing to be wise (wisdom in this sense was a negative one, to play God if possible). The Scripture says, “…she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise.” Her craving to have power to operate like God was indeed not matched with the desires of God’s own heart. David’s desire for Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1-5) also was out of place because he too did not match it with the desires of God. Beloved, despite all the women and wealth which were at David’s disposal as a king, yet he fell a victim of human desires not aligned to the desires of God. This is to tell you how serious human cravings can be. Sometimes human cravings can long for things which are horrible to the ears. Beloved in Christ, in order to help our cravings, let us surrender our hearts to Jesus to guide what comes out of it. Our Lord Jesus Christ says, “For from the inside, from a person’s heart, come the evil ideas which lead him to do immoral things – to rob, kill, commit adultery, be greedy, and do all sorts of evil things; deceit, indecency, jealousy, slander, pride, and folly – all these evil things come from inside a person.” The desires of our hearts are to be constantly examined and moderated. Thomas Kempis has a useful advice for us concerning our desires, “That you conform your desires entirely according to My good pleasure, and be not a lover of self but an earnest doer of My will. Desires very often inflame you and drive you madly on, but consider whether you act for My honor, or for your own advantage. If I am the cause, you will be well content with whatever I ordain. If, on the other hand there is any self-seeking lurk in you, it troubles you and weighs you down. Take care, then, that you do not rely too much on preconceived desires that has no reference to Me, lest you repent later on and be displeased with what at first pleased you and which you desired as being for the best.” We must therefore continue to request of the Lord to guide all our cravings so that we do not fall into the devil’s trap. The devil knows for sure how to manipulate our cravings and what to manipulate it with and hence, he came to Jesus, applying the three “Ps” of “PLEASURE”, “POSSESSION” and “POWER”. Whenever our desires tend towards waywardness, let us firmly state, get behind O evil desire. “From now on, then, you must live the rest of your earthly lives controlled by God’s will and not by human desires.” (1 Peter 4:2)
