Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 4:10

Yesterday, the Holy Spirit talked to us on the need to be an honourable man and a believer who appreciates that all blessings and gifts come from God alone. The third landmark in the life of Jabez was that he prayed, “let your hand be with me”. Dear friend, God’s hand represents His power and strength. Jabez asked that God’s power be made real in him and through him. Jabez knew that without God’s power he could not maintain his integrity; let alone be pleasing to Him.  Hear the Psalmist, “Praise the LORD, you heavenly beings; praise his glorious power. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, even the cedars of Lebanon. He makes the mountains of Lebanon jump like calves and makes Mount Hermon leap like young bull. The voice of the LORD makes the lightening flash. His voice makes the desert shake; he shakes the desert of Kadesh. The Lord’s voice shakes the oaks and strips the leaves from the trees while everyone in the temple shouts “Glory to God” (Psa. 29:1, 5-8). Here, the Psalmist presents a picture of what the power of God can do. No wonder Daniel prayed for this power to rest upon him so that he could do exploits”. (Dan.11: 32b).

Beloved in Christ, the righteous example of Jabez emphasizes the obvious truth that God blesses those who faithfully call upon Him. Jabez’s life and prayer show how God delights to bless those who call upon Him in faith and earnestly seek His favour.Like Jabez every believer should pray, believing that God is well able to supply much more than we asked for or imagined in our heart

. The Scripture says, “Believe in the Lord your God, so you shall be established.” (2 Chron. 20:20). Believers should learn from Jabez model of prayers: first he earnestly desired God’s favour and blessing (Verse 10b). Second, he petitioned God to enlarge his territory (Verse 10c). Third he asked that God’s hand (i.e. presence and power) would be with him in all spheres of his life. (Verse 10d) and finally he asked God to keep him from evil or harm so that he would not be a cause of pain to God, himself or others (Verse 10e). God granted Jabez’s prayer and granted him that which he requested. Beloved, the Holy Spirit tells us at today’s reflection that God hears our prayers when we genuinely call on Him. He opens the windows of heaven and pours His blessings on us in measures that we cannot imagine. He is a good God! Child of God, ensure that each time you go to God in prayer, go into His presence with integrity, total surrender and expectation; and He will satisfy you fully.
