Scripture Reading: Isaiah 44:1-3

Verses 3 – 4 of our reference today says, “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon the seed, and my blessings upon thy offspring: And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses”. Although, Israel at the time of Prophet Isaiah was an apostate (largely unbelieving) nation, he (Isaiah) prophesied that a day shall come when the Holy Spirit would be poured out upon their future generation. This prophesy found partial fulfillment on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:17 – 18). It awaited complete fulfillment for Israel after they accept Christ as the Messiah (Rom. 11:25 – 26). The outpouring of God’s Spirit upon you is associated with restoration, blessing and fruitfulness.

Friend, just like the people of Israel, there are times when a believer falls into a low, sad state of feeling. More often, this state of affairs happens when the believer finds it hard to overcome a particular sinful habit or action. Each time, he succumbs to this sinful practice; the heart is full of regrets, fear and self pity. Today, the Holy Spirit says to you that this is not the way to rise from the dust, but to continue in it. Regret, fear and self pity can only be experienced for a short time; and the believer resumes, even with greater intensity. Slavish fear cannot bring a backslider back to God. It is the gospel that saves the sinking soul. It is the gospel liberty that can restore the fainting believer. The saving gospel of our Lord is the fuel that restores a thirsty soul; brings him back to God satisfied. St. Ulric says, “Take away the fuel and you take away the flame. ” Child of God, are you thirsty for the living God and unhappy because your soul seems to be experiencing some dryness (aridity). Is it true of you that you are not feeling spiritually fulfilled and the joy of salvation seems to be lost? The Psalmist prays, “Let me hear the sound of joy and gladness and though you have crushed me and broken me, I will be happy once again Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation, and make me willing to obey you” (Psalm 51:8,12).

Beloved, the sad consequence of this state of aridity or spiritual dryness, and barreness, is that you no longer bring forth the “fruit” (Rom. 7:4); expected of you from God. Your heart is desirous to be useful to your church, neigbours and family, but you cannot – because the spiritual capacity is not available. Dear friend, here is the promise that you need, so hold onto it: “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty”. Friend, take up the word of God, study and pray; then you will receive the graces you so much require; for you will be refreshed, as water refreshes the thirsty. As water quickens the life of sleeping vegetables, your life will be quickened by fresh grace that comes from the gospel of liberty. As water swells the buds and makes the fruits ripen, you will have the needed grace capable of making you fruitful in the ways of God. You shall be filled with the oil of gladness, power over sin and joy in the Lord.
