Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 15:7

Everything in this world seeks to bring us down, but putting your mind on Christ gives you determination to keep on going when times get hard. A story was told of a man who travelled to South Africa to dig for gold. After six months of digging without success, he got discouraged and sold the land. The man that bought the land also started to dig but did not dig for long before he struck gold. Dear friends in Christ, before you can reach your desired and God-given destination, you must be determined and courageous. Oftentimes we give up when the victory is close at hand. Only a determined mind and a courageous faith can overcome and turn obstacles into opportunities for the manifestation of God’s glory. Martin Luther King confessed thus, “Due to my involvement in the struggle for the freedom of my people, I have been battered by the storm of persecution. I must admit that at times I have felt that I could no longer bear such a heavy burden, and have been tempted to retreat to a more quiet and serene life. But every time such a temptation appeared, something came to strengthen my determination. FAITH IN JESUS GAVE ME COURAGE TO FACE ALL THESE.”

When the war is fierce, especially when they are met with stiff resistance and no headway, many soldiers are tempted to escape; they are tempted to give up. When it seems there is no progress or when a mission or attempts are greeted with repeated failure, when we are repeatedly carried away by chronic distractions, we are tempted to be discouraged or lose focus. The Scripture text today says “But don’t give up. No, rather “take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”

Child of God, don’t give up when that familiar sin, still crouching at your door after all these years, pounces again with temptation. Don’t give up when you feel that deep soul weariness from long battles with persistent weaknesses. Don’t give up when your long asked-and-sought-and-knocked-for prayers have not yet been answered. Don’t give up when waiting on God seems endless. Don’t give up when the devil’s fiery darts of doubt find flesh and make you reel. Don’t give up when the fragmenting effect of multiple pressures seems relentless. Don’t give up when the field the Lord assigned to you is hard and the harvest does not look promising. Don’t give up when you labor in obscurity and you wonder how much it even matters. Do not accept defeat, you have what it takes to stay focused. Philippians 4:13 says you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. With the Lord’s strength, Christians can do and overcome anything. Get rid of doubt, stress, and fear by trusting in the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul.
