Scripture Reading:  Isaiah 30:21

Simon Peter leaves us with very important words to ponder about in John 6:68, “……You have the words that give eternal life.” Jesus has the words that leads to eternal life and the believer whose focus is on eternal life would want to be directed by Him daily. Just as it happened that in the time of Peter, many walked away, denying and refusing to hear from the Lord, so it is with believers today. Many who came to hear from Jesus gave reasons why they will not want to continue to hear from the Lord but Simon Peter knew that there was no reason whatsoever not to hear from the Lord.  Today, we really need to hear from Him if we do not want to make mistakes in our lives.  In our Scripture reading today, Prophet Isaiah makes us to understand that there is a road that we need to follow so as not to wander away. He says that we cannot follow that road unless we develop the ear that can listen and hear the Lord. No wonder he says, “You will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road.  Follow it” (Verse. 21). Hear the Psalmist, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.”(Psa. 37:23)   (NKJV) Stressing on the importance of hearing from the Lord, a Catholic Priest told me that he would not venture into anything without first inquiring and hearing from the Lord. David could not pursue the attackers of Zigla and the abduction of his wife and others, without asking of the Lord and hearing expressly from Him. Are you still hearing from the Lord? Prophet Samuel sought to hear from the Lord in 1 Samuel 3:10, “The LORD came and stood there, and called as he had before, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak; your servant is listening.”  Samuel was spiritually alert that was why he could hear the voice of the Lord.  Spiritual deafness is therefore something every child of God should seriously work against.  Dear Child of God if you are not spiritually alert, it means your spiritual life is inactive.  You may have cut off from hearing from the Lord if you are found wanting in the following areas: Have you stopped studying your Bible, stopped attending the Holy Mass, receiving the Holy Communion, going for sacramental confession or neglected the gathering of brethren?   We can also stop hearing from God when we are often distracted by affairs of this life. Sometimes it could even be our business that is distracting us from hearing the voice of the Lord.  Moses heard the voice of the Lord in the burning bush; Mary sat at the feet of Jesus to hear the voice of the Lord; but Solomon stopped hearing the voice of the Lord, and his seemingly glorious reign ended up in disgrace. Judas refused to hear the voice of the Lord telling him that “one of you will betray me”, he ended up a sad story.  Dear Child of God in your daily life, get God involved by disposing yourself to hear from Him always. Here is a striking publisher’s description from Priscilla Shirer book entitled, “Discerning the Voice of God”, “Do you feel that the ability to hear God’s voice is for other people and not for you? Is it only for people who lived in Biblical times?

Not at all! The God who loved you enough to die for you loves you enough to talk to you. And wherever you are in your spiritual walk, God will find a way to speak to you in a way you will understand.

Become acquainted with the Voice that has spoken from a fire and a cloud, with visible signs and an invisible Spirit, through a burning bush and burning hearts. Hear from some of the most well-known Christians in history about how God speaks to them, and discover for yourself how you can discern the voice of God.”

Beloved, God also speaks to us through the events of life such as hardship, sickness and afflictions.  JUST LISTEN.  Few tips can help to reawaken our spiritual ear, always live in the presence of God, study and meditate upon the Word of God regularly, practise quiet time, do not disregard going to church and fellowshipping with your brethren, make God and the Holy Spirit your partner in your daily walk, be a praying person. Thomas Kempis concludes today’s reflection thus: “Therefore, do not let Moses speak to me, but only You, Lord Jesus, the Eternal Truth; otherwise I may die and be fruitless, warmed outwardly, but not inflamed within.  Then would I receive severe judgment, for I would have heard Your word and not obeyed it, known it and not loved it, believed it and not kept it.”

Prayer Points:

  1. Thank God for giving man the position that no other creature could attain.
  2. Humbly and sincerely seek God’s mercy for being stubborn to the voice of God.
  3. Lord, grant me the silence, true humility, divine reverence, deep affection and the tranquility of body and soul without which it might be difficult to hear from you.

Exercise:  Sit back and reflect upon those things that have prevented you from hearing  from God.

Memory Verse:  Revelation 3:22
