Scripture Reading: Luke 6: 43-49

The root of a plant serves two major functions: it anchors the plant to the ground, thus giving it the stability it requires as well as receives nourishment from the soil to help the plant grow. The tap root which many huge trees possess is known to grow very deep into the soil hence their survival through various seasons of the year and indeed for several centuries. The anchorage a tap root gives to a tree can be likened to that which the foundation gives to a house. The stronger the foundation, the stronger the superstructure of the building. If our marriage, finances, business, career or ministry is built on a solid foundation or on the right foundation it will stand. But if our lives are built on a faulty or evil foundation it will crumble.

Our Lord Jesus Christ likens those who hear and act on His words to a man who builds his house on rock (Lk 6:47-48). We all hear our Lord Jesus’ words on a daily basis. Indeed, we have become so familiar with His teachings and parables that we know the stories by heart. Yet, such deep knowledge is of no use if we do not act on it. It is through our conscious efforts to live out what we learn from the Scriptures that our faith will grow and stand the test of time.

While the foolish man chosed the easy way out, the wise man who built his house on rock had to dig deep. Digging deep must have required his commitment, determination, self-denial and time. In the same way, as Christians, Christ calls us to dig deep – to put in all our efforts, self-denial and determination in living out His words. As we do this, we will have a store of goodness in our hearts that reflects in our words and action. As we make efforts to live out our Christian faith fully, let us ask our Lord Jesus Christ for the grace to strengthen us in our moments of temptation and weakness.
