Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:9-6
Yesterday, the Lord started by reprimanding the youth to have a rethink about the unhealthy pursuit of wealth. Continuing today, the Lord wants us to look at other ways by which we are wasting our youthful age instead of channeling the energy to godly ways and in service of Him.
Another wasteful activity engaged by the youth is the life of immorality. As a youth, your life must remain holy and undefiled. The church still maintains this moral principle about sex, “No pre-marital or extra-marital sex.” The church speaks to the youth today, keep your life sacred until the day you receive the sacrament of matrimony. Are you engaged in any form of immoral activity as a youth? The Lord wants you to stop it today, because you are wasting your life. The Lord wants you to, “Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him.” (Romans 12:1) The Lord wants you to remain the vessel of honour, He created you to be. The life of the youth is terribly endangered in the hands of immorality. In sexual immorality, a lot of evil influences are introduced into the life of the youth: He is prone to engaging in abortions; He opens up himself to many deadly diseases. As youths, Joseph should be your model because as a youth, he fled from staining his garments. He knew the benefits of remaining pure as a youth. He knew the love and benefits he would enjoy from God by remaining pure and holy, and so even the allurements and inducement by Potiphar’s wife were not enough to make him fall. Do not let any man or woman lure you into a life of waste.
According to a Christian writer, “God’s message in the Bible and the church calls us to take a stand that is unpopular with some people – to support sexual abstinence till marriage.” The Scripture warns the youths of this age, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honour. For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness of life.”
Also more striking is how the youths are rushing into deadly groups. Many of our youths have signed up as members of evil groups. As a result, they have become terrors to their families, neighbours and the society at large. All satanic relationships are Satan’s ploy to waste the life of the youths. Pope Francis concludes today’s reflection thus, “Dear young people, you have many plans and dreams for the future. But, is Christ at the center of each of your plans and dreams?”
