Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:1-9
The greatest disadvantage you can put yourself into, is to think you are nobody, a failure, under-achiever and inferior. When you have this sort of perception about yourself, you will find it difficult to activate your faith and doubt becomes the dominant thought in your mind. Inferiority complex develops from looking down on yourself. It begins from one feeling that my parents are not rich, or I may make mistakes when speaking in public. Inferiority complex can also come from the mindset that only the educated, the well dressed and persons whose parents are popular can be heard. The list is endless. This is a very wrong mindset and capable of making the child of God not to understand or appreciate God’s love and the enormous gifts deposited in man. Hear St. Paul writing to the Galatian Christians, “There is no more distinctions between Jews and Greeks, slaves and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:28)
Beloved, the Holy Spirit says to you today, alter that negative opinion you have about yourself. You are special! William Blake said, “The man who never alters his opinion is like a standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.”Your concern is sometimes about how people look at you. Some look down on you. Others don’t believe in your dreams. Some think you cannot amount to anything good. You are sometimes treated as an outcast even in your own home. Probably because your younger ones are richer and more intelligent than you are.In your office, you do not belong to the group regarded as the drivers of the system. Some see you as a loyal worker whose humility and commitment to work is why you are still in the job. Often you are tempted to ask questions such as, “Why am I not born into that rich family? Why are things the way they are? Why are things usually difficult for me?” Verses 9 – 10 of our scriptural reference says, “But you are the chosen race, the king’s priests, the holy nation, God’s own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvellous light. At one time you were not God’s people, but now you are his people; at one time you did not know God’s mercy, but now you have received his mercy.”
Once again, the Spirit says to you, “You are special and as important as any to God.” This is who God thinks you are: a chosen people, royal priesthood. What can be great as that? So you have no reason whatsoever to allow yourself fall into a wrong opinion of who you are. Beloved, you are simply marvelous and special to God.
Stop looking down on yourself and what people say or think of you. Start living like the child of God that you are. Stop your fear, pursue your dreams. You will get there because you are special.
