FRIDAY DAY 9
ELIZABETH WELCOMED MARY
(DAY 8 OF THE GREAT MARIAN NOVENA)
Scripture Reading: Luke 1:39-56
“ The Virgin, weighed with the Word of God, comes down the road: if only you will shelter her!” – St. John of the Cross.
In the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, so much resonates. They each recognize the action of God in the life of the other, just as we are recognizing the action of God in and through DSD in celebrating this 10th anniversary. On this 8th day of the GREAT MARIAN NOVENA, as you have welcome or invoke Mary the Great and humble mother of God, and our mother as your intercessor and prayer partner through this MARIAN NOVENA, be sure that God will send divine helpers to minister to your need, at the end of this Great Marian Novena, Mary will visit you, you shall hear the good news that will give you joy, the presence and power of the Holy Spirit will shake you.
To welcome Mary is no distraction from our Lord Jesus Christ. For when I welcome her, something else happens too; like Elizabeth, I welcome the Christ she bears, because, through divine will and privilege, Mary is inseparable from our Lord Jesus Christ. Lumen Gentium 53 says “united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie” Every encounter with her can only result in an encounter with Christ. we continually turn to Mary…to seek…Christ she holds in her arms. Mary is united in an ineffable manner with the Lord. For she was completely conformed “to her Son, the Lord of lords. In greeting her, I offer God praise, as her cousin does, for it is God who has done this great thing.
While we don’t know the greeting Mary brings to Elizabeth, it had an effect so powerful that Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit, and begins to speak out prophetically. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” (1:41)
John the Baptist, in Elizabeth’s womb, also responded to the presence of the Messiah inside of Mary.
Reaching out is the loving response of Mary to us, she humbly gives back to us her favour, by reminding us through her story of Visitation that she always wants to reach out to and to bring our Lord Jesus Christ into our lives. More so, in times when we need Mama Mary the most, that’s when she most graciously makes the ‘effort’ to come to us and help us. Just like what she did for her cousin Elizabeth.
