Scripture Reading: Matthew 24:24
Our reflection today draws our attention to the need to be watchful of false prophets. The Christian race is not to be run carelessly. It must be pursued with the wisdom of God, this is so because the most important thing is how you end, not necessarily how you began your Christian race. Our scripture reading says, “For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear; they will perform great miracles and wonders in order to deceive even God’s chosen people, if possible”. The chosen people of God are those whom God wants to be with Him forever and ever. Today the word of God is warning us that we can be deceived, this is not just ordinary deceit, but a design by the devil to defraud us of eternity. No wonder St. John Endes says, “Let us therefore give ourselves to God with a great desire to live thus, and beg him to destroy in us the life of the world of sin, and to establish his life within us.”
Our Lord Jesus wants His disciples to cautious, not to be carried away by anything. In Matthew 10:16, He says: “Listen! I am sending you out just like sheep to a pack of wolves. You must be as cautious as snakes and as gentle as doves.” God’s chosen people should not be easily deceived about the things of God. We should possess enough wisdom to be able to decipher even the slightest deceit or error concerning our faith. We should be able to know when a teaching is false and misleading and when a miracle or wonder is from God. In fact, miracles and wonders should not be the criteria for judging how wonderful a preacher is.
Beloved, our Lord expresses disappoint on the chosen in Luke 16:8, He says: “As a result the master of this dishonest manager praised him for doing such a shrewd thing; because the people of this world are much more shrewd in handling their affairs than the people who belong to the light”. The Lord desires that we become experts with matters that concern our Christian faith. We must possess the ability to understand things and make right judgments. Imagine a case of, a spiritualist claiming to be a pastor, asked you to take a bath in the stream as a way of washing away your sins. This is falsehood as such an action does not have the capacity to wash away sins. For your sins to be washed away, you must accept Jesus as your personal Lord and saviour, repent of all evils and you are saved. Those looking for the fruit of the womb have been asked to do horrible things, even to the extent of making love with the spiritualist. Some have been asked to drink stool or urine. Some many children of God have been defrauded of huge sums of money in the name of family liberation; others pay money for fasting to be done for them. So many Christians have been asked to surrender their property because they claim that the property is the source of their problems.
In 1 king 3:9, Solomon asked God, “So give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil, otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours?” There are so many things happening in our world today that are capable of leading us away from God, but today like Solomon, let us ask God to give us the wisdom we need to be able to overcome the deceptions in the world.
