Scripture Reading: 1 John 5:5

From the very beginning, since creation, there has been an irreconcilable division between light and darkness. This enmity came as a result of a battle that preceded the creation of man, yet today, man has become the center of it. It was a battle that arose from rebellion, the rebellion of Lucifer against God. Ever since, a war rages between these two personalities – Light (God) and Darkness (Satan).  From the moment a person receives salvation from sin and accepts the Lordship of Christ, he automatically becomes a soldier of Christ. And from that moment he is identified as an enemy by Darkness, and then the battle begins.

Beloved, as children of Light, God’s children, we are constantly involved in warfare (battle) with the devil and his demons. The Scripture warns us not to be ignorant of the devises of our adversary, who, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking who to devour. This is because he is a strategist that never gives up. He plans evil days, and sends fiery darts of fear and doubts into the hearts of believers in order to frustrate them. He builds evil appetites, lusts, desires and passions in our hearts, and sends evil imaginations into our minds and these become strongholds that hold men captive and in bondage. Building strongholds of immoral habits and evil compulsive behaviors and addictions are the devil’s favorite pastime.

But in all of these, his most destructive weapon and cunning strategy, is his ability to lure man into sin so as to separate him from his only defense – Jesus. The enemy is subtle and very crafty. From his first success over our first parents, he has almost always succeeded in luring God’s children into rebellion. Except we stand our guard, he will overcome us in his relentless onslaught.

Beloved, how often have you fallen in the evil days? What wounds and scars have the darts of the wicked left on you, all because you have deserted your Refuge? You must know that as long as you have a right standing before God, you are untouchable by the devil. St. Paul, writing to the Ephesian Christians says, “For this reason, we must take unto ourselves the whole armor of God, that we may be able to stand the evil days and darts the wicked sends after us.” (Eph. 6:13). Our weapons against the enemy are all in Christ Jesus. We overcome only by His cleansing Blood, by remaining under the shadow of His Cross daily.

The Holy Spirit warns us against having any involvement with the unfruitful works of darkness, we are rather to renounce them. Beloved, you are already defeated in this warfare when anything of darkness is found in you. Satan cannot cast out Satan, Jesus tells us. We are to resist the devil, and he will flee from us. You either stand with the only Overcomer, Jesus, and overcome, or continue to play with sin, and remain a captive. What will your choice be? Jesus overcame by His Cross, you can freely enjoy this victory.
