Scripture Reading: Psalms 41:4

There is balm in Gilead that heals the sin-sick soul. Indeed, dear friends, a soul can be sick, crumbled and wounded. A soul can be sick either by malnourishment or by sin. When we do not feed our inner man with the necessary nutrients which it needs for growth and nourishment, it shrinks and goes sick. When we starve our God-seeking souls of the word of God and prayers, it goes sick. When we desert our places of refill, that is, spiritual gathering where there is real prayer and the word is broken, we starve our souls. Beloved in the Lord, sin injures a soul and leaves it sick. Sin separates a soul from its Maker and Source and makes it impoverished. Sin kills slowly and silently like cancer; it eats up its victim gradually such that the victim now sees it as normal. Sin has the ability to multiply itself and bring about a great deal of harm. The Psalmist understood this very well when he prayed, “Heal my soul for I have sinned against you.” This should be the cry of every believer because the wellbeing of the soul determines the wellbeing of the body. What happens to the soul affects the body. As such, a sick soul will result in a sick personality.

Often times we are too concerned about our physical wellbeing that we pay little or no attention to our spiritual wellbeing. We do not pay much attention to what happens to the soul. We do not gauge ours souls nor take records of the state of our relationship with God. We go about shouting “all is well” whereas all is actually not well. All cannot be well when we still live a life of perpetual infidelity to our Creator. All cannot be well when the meditations of our hearts are continually evil and corrupt. We must cry out to God like the Psalmist, “Heal my soul, Lord, for I have sinned against you.” We must continually appeal for His mercy and say, “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me” because mercy indeed prevails over judgment. May be, what you need to experience a change in that situation you have been crying about all these years is just a healing touch of the Lord upon your soul. Maybe the root of your problems is a hidden sin that the devil is capitalizing upon to perpetuate evil in your life and home. All of us who are prone to sin must cry out to the Holy of Holies today for healing upon our souls. We beseech before the sanctuary of the Most High that He may apply the balm of Gilead upon our wounded souls.
