Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:14-16
Recently, news of corruption affecting the top executives of FIFA has been in the airwaves. There have been accusations and counter accusations of money transfers (bribes) and financial inducements to top leaders in FIFA probably to influence the course of events. It is not just a FIFA problem, all over the world; people are paying money to have their ways, not minding whether the action is justifiable. Today our Lord puts this question across to us: “My Dear Child, How much money can be paid to you to influence you to do what is not the right thing; to do what I did not teach you to do?” He says to you, “Should you actually allow yourself to be influences by physical cash or materials? The Lord says this to us today, “My Dear Child, none of these should influence you.” For He tells us this, in Matthew 6:25, “……After all, isn’t life worth more than food? And isn’t the body worth more than clothes?”
Dear child of God, we have a value that money cannot equate and so we are not to be slaves to money or any materials for that matter. We are not to allow money or material inducements to dictate what we are to do or the right decision to be taken on an issue. Let us not be like Judas who betrayed the Master for a paltry sum of thirty pieces of silver coin. The truth is that any money paid to you for doing something that is wrong will create an opening for evil to come into the person’s life. Besides, such money is not usually used to do something that will have a lasting value. Whenever you are influenced by money you have automatically sold your divine birthright as Esau did in Genesis 25:29-31 thus, “One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry and said to Jacob, “I’m starving; give me some of that red stuff.”(That is why he was called Edom) Jacob answered, “I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son.” Esau said, “All right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do me then? Jacob answered, “First make a vow that you will give me your rights. Esau made the vow and gave his rights to Jacob.”
Dear friends in Christ, have you received any financial or material inducement to pervert the course of justice thereby causing pain to others affected by your decision? Have you resorted to kidnapping your own people? Have you hijacked the money given to you to give to a poor woman in the village? Do you steal from the church offering money and justify your action that it is God’s money? Do you buy and sell fake products and brand them as original? You have allowed money to dictate the affairs of your life; and to make decision for you. If you allow the “sweetness” of money to influence you, you will end up terminating your source of income, blessings and favour. Do not allow yourself to be an instrument of pain to the lives of others. Fear and reverence God in all you do and be assured of your physical and eternal security.
- Thank the good Lord for exposing the dangers inherent in the influence of money.
- O Lord, destroy in me the spirit of materialism in Jesus name.
- Lord, I commit all my needs into your hands; do not let the needs of this world lead me astray in Jesus name.
- Dear Father, please help me not to be influenced by money. Help me not to sell my birthright like Esau did because of a pot of porridge.
Exercise: Never allow money to influence you to do evil. Fear the consequences of selling your birthright because you will always regret it.
