Scripture Reading: John 14:6
The way we received the name Christians is remarkable and interesting. The name was not just formed by a group of people. There was no conference or council meeting to decide what name the people that follow Christ should be called. When the idea to form a business is borne, one of the serious things that you consider is what name the business is going to be incorporated with. In our time, you see the competition that is on ground in many churches, everyone trying to put up a name that leads souls to his church and even a name that suggests that this is the church that Jesus dreamt about. But I tell you Christianity got its name from the way they were living out the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Beloved in Christ, the question of what must I do to be saved is answered by Jesus in our scripture reading today. Jesus is the only way to heaven. During His earthly ministry, Jesus taught his disciples many things and gave them many examples of how things should be done. Prior to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, they were so many faulty teachings; men used the opportunity of religion to bamboozle the people. They exploited the people. This is still prevalent in our time, the teaching about God and His ways is now selfish or done basically to gain material benefits and not necessarily to save a soul. Because of this they interpret the word of God to suit their interests. The big question is “what did Jesus teach us?” This is what the Lord has to say in John 13:13-14: “You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is what I am. I, YOUR Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then should wash one another’s feet. I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you”. The Lord demands that we always follow His ways. Let us follow the teachings of our Lord revealed to His Church and the apostles. Hear St. Paul, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel that is different from the one we preached to you, may he be condemned to hell! We have said it before, and now I say it again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel that is different from the one you accepted, may he be condemned to hell! (Galatians 1:8-9). Ironically, today people are teaching their own ways and influencing people to follow them. For example, Jesus taught us not to divorce but today divorce is on the increase and many seem to propose that we reconsider Our Lord Jesus’ stand on this issue.
Jesus is the only truth. The way the world operates is totally in deceit. The whole system is built on falsehood. This is what the scripture tells us: “We know that we belong to God even though the whole world is under the rule of the Evil one.” The whole world is under the influence of the Devil who operates in deceit. Jesus came to tell us the truth about everything. He is indeed the source of all truth. That is why most times, Philosophers’ quest for the truth hits the rock. They tend to seek the truth outside the source of truth. Beloved in Christ, if you want to know the right thing to do, ask Jesus. If we operate in truth, the world will be a better place because we will no longer be influenced by the devil.
Jesus is the only Life. If the reason Jesus died for man was just for him to live here on earth joyfully and after death everything ends then don’t you think that there would have been no need to die. His death meant more than given us life here on earth. The life Jesus gave us is the live that does not end. Through His death, He destroyed sin and death which leads to eternal damnation and restored life in us that endures forever. Therefore Jesus is the only source of Salvation. Dear friends in Christ, Let us follow Jesus who has shown us the Way, the Truth and the Life.
