Scripture Reading: John 11:17-27, 38-44
In natural every day experiences of life, there are two words that echo in the minds of anyone that cares to look a little more closely at things: MORTALITY and CORRUPTION, or to put it more bluntly, Death and Decay. These words were introduced into the world by the devil through our first parents, and nothing man has ever done has been effective enough to eradicate these evils. All the riches and all the intelligence of man, all the scientific and bio-technological achievements of man haven’t been able to take them out. As one Christian writer noted, “Death and Decay like dark clouds, follow every human being.” They are perceived in almost every venture of man. They are reflected in our bodies, relationships, emotions, academics, careers, businesses, etc. They rest upon every beauty, sophistication and elegance the world can ever boast of. Wherever man is found, these two weeping clouds are above them – Death and Decay.
These were the clouds hovering over one little house in Bethany where Martha and her sister Mary lived, and the death and the decaying body of Lazarus their brother was a testimony of this reality. Death and Decay are unchanging natural phenomena, a fact that uncountable human experiences of it has proven. Yet on this particular day, something unnatural happened: the Resurrection and Life appeared and Death and Decay were reversed.
Jesus had been a friend of the family but they had never known nor experienced Him as Life nor as the Resurrection. However, when they implored Him in the most unchanging natural human situation, they saw a miracle; the dead received life!
These two evils, Death and Decay, programmed by the devil, may presently be at work in your life, health, business, career, marital relationship, family and even your walk with God. Be of good cheers because the One whose voice wakes the dead is here. Men and women may have gathered to comfort you but it not the sympathy of humans you need, you need the Resurrection and Life. It takes only God to shoot the basic element of life into anything and if God doesn’t do, these two cursed words would continue to rest upon it.
St. Paul speaking to the Roman Christians said, “He calls those things which are not as though they were. The God who brings the dead to life and whose command brings into being what didn’t exist.” (Rom. 4:17-21) Abraham believed despite the obvious deadness of his body and of Sarah’s womb, and he saw the glory of God. All things are possible for him who believes! Jesus poses the same question to you today concerning that barrenness, that health challenge, that seemly unchangeable situation, as He did to Martha centuries ago; “DO YOU BELIEVE THIS? “Why not believe as Abraham and echo the same as Martha, “Yes Lord I believe!” and stand back and see the glory of our great God manifest in your marriage, health, children, business, academics and fruitfulness!
