Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:8

When I was younger, I heard someone asked, “If you were to be convicted for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to prove it?” That is a tough question we should all think about. A good court can not convict anyone unless there is an evi- dence against them. In some cases, those evidence comes from first-hand witnesses. Other times it comes from physical evidence left behind. What evi- dence do you leave behind for others to know that you are a Christian? Can eyewitnesses tell by how you live that you are a Christian? Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us the evidence that is needed in John 13:35.

In Matthew 3:8, John the Baptist was out at the riv- er baptizing people when the religious leaders came to take a look. One of the things he said to them was, “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God” (NLT). This means that God looks beyond our words and religious activities to see if our conducts back up what we say, and He judges our words by actions that accompany them. Do your actions match your words? He knew they were manufacturing false evidence to try to prove they were righteous, but their lives contradicted that evidence. Our Lord Jesus Christ later said they were whitewashed tombs. They looked good on the out- side but were full of death on the inside.

Today‘s reflection is not to say that you earn salva- tion by your works. It’s saying when you truly experi- ence the power of God in your life, it changes you. Your life changes inside and out. You find that going to church is not evidence that you are a Christian, though as a Christian you must go to church. The challenge to you today is to take an honest look at the evidence in your life. What does it point to? Read John 13:35
