Scripture Reading: Song of Songs 8:1-7
Verse 6 – 7 of our scriptural readings says, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealously unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame, many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned”Yesterday, we reflected on the need to honour marriage. Today, we will build on another ingredient – which is love. Love is the giving up of oneself for the betterment of the other. To love genuinely goes beyond the passionate feeling that arises within you like one in a philo kind of love. This is because, feelings are momentary. To love is to sacrifice, and humble oneself. It means not holding the offence against the other. It breeds respect, tolerance and acceptance. Love is kindness to another. It is the timely correction of an act of evil. It is bearing one another’s burden while struggling through life. The conviction that your partner will not do the wrong thing by the long friendship and trust also rest with love. It speaks the truth even though it hurts.
The love in our reflection today rest on marital love or the essential characteristics of marital love. Whatever the challenge may be, the offense, the ocean wave that may rise, love in a marriage will overcome all of these challenges. The threats that come to a marriage can be overcome when the above love is practised. As the grave will not give up the dead in them, so also is the unyielding power of genuine love. Why do people divorce themselves? Some would say, because ‘She has not given me a child’, Oh, I suspect he or she is keeping another relationship, ‘we have irreconcilable difference, my choice of him or her was a mistake. Some may say, ‘he or she is too overbearing’. Where then is the fire of love that sparked up the relationship ab initio. Recall, beloved, that God is love and He was the influence that overshadowed you when you first met her.The ‘many water’ in our reflection springs from the belief in the ancient east that the primeval water was a threat to the world. Thus, the song writer believed very strongly that this water cannot quench love. What will make you give up your love for someone else? Is it the beauty of another woman? What will the same beauty be in the next ten (10) years? Is it money? Money is a spirit and it can fly away, for it has wings. Is it fame? Men rise and fall. Make no mistake about this, God expect you to stick to your love. Will the temporal set back of your spouse push you into marital infidelity? No it should not because the travail is but momentary. It has a short life span. Even though your husband or wife is a drunk, stay with him or her and believe God for deliverance. He or she may be dirty, encourage one another in love. What threat will make you turn your back on the one you freely gave yourself to?Wake up! Tell your spouse again that you love him or her. Buy him or her gift. Celebrate the love that has kept you together over the years. Be grateful for the love you share. I believe the enemy will start running when it realizes that the traps and threats cannot stop you. God is love!
- Thank God for your husband or your wife.
- Thank God for the years you have spent together in marriage.
- Pray that the threats of life will not stop your love.
- Pray for couples in difficulties that the Lord will help them and set them free.
Exercise: Take your spouse out within the week. Announce once more your love for each other.
