Scripture Reading: Psalm 144:2
A very important key to leading a good Christian life is getting to know who God is. So many Christians are suffering because of the very fact that the knowledge they have of God is very shallow. Thomas Kempis says this about Christians: “We should study, not so much to know as to put into practice the truths which we learn. Let us listen to the Eternal Word, who speaks to the heart more than to the mind. To know and to do what is necessary for our salvation constitutes a true Christian conscience”. St. Jerome says: “Ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of God”. Many Christians continue to grope in pains and sorrows because they do not know the kind of God they serve. Many have resorted to fetish powers, in the name of seeking protection, wealth, peace, joy, happiness amongst other things. HenceHose says, “My people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge.” (Hos. 4:6).
The scriptural passage presents David, accounting of his knowledge about God. He says: The Lord is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe. David knew so well the God he serves as the Mighty God in battles. Hence, he would not look for protection from the gods of Baal. He knew that God is the surest power he could cling to. The protection that comes from God surpasses all the protection of the military of the world powers. His Knowledge of God was the source of his faith in God. He knew that putting his trust in God, he cannot be confounded. He cannot be surmounted. David knew that all battles are victoriously won only in God. God was his High Tower. When you are in this High Tower, you are forever safe. The book of Proverbs says, “The Lord is like a Strong Tower, where the righteous can go and be safe.”(Prov. 18:10).
Beloved, the troubles and trials around us continue to test our faith in God. These trials question the place of God in our lives. The surest protection man can ever trust is from the supreme Protector; His protection never fails. His promises are forever sure. He is the faithful God. Those who have made the Lord their High Tower are forever safe. They have nothing to fear. David knew this secret. He went into battle with Goliath. He won. That’s the outcome of him that has made God his high tower. When the Lord becomes your High Tower, your prayers are answered. O child of God, who is your High Tower?
