Scripture Reading: Psalm 107:1 – 43
Let us start this first day of the last month of this year with this beautiful prayerfrom Blessed James Alberione, “Iadoreyour eternal and impenetrable plans for love of you. I submit to you with all my heart. I offer you the sacrifice of my entire being in union with that of Jesus, my divine Saviour ”. From the beginning of the year till date, you may have had unexpected disappointments, unfulfilled dreams, unrealized personal plans, trials and temptations. You may be concluding now that this year is actually a bad one, and perhaps, wishing that it never came again. On the contrary, this year may have been very pleasant, good and fulfilling for some persons. During the year, God may have blessed you unimaginably, exceedingly much more than you imagined. Oh, your prayer is that next year continues like that.
Beloved, whichever way the pendulum has been swinging this year, one important fact to note is that, “… God’s love for you endures forever” (Verse lb). It does not really matter what you have been going through since the beginning of this year, one thing is certain, and that is, your Father in heaven knows you, loves you personally and plans the best for you. No wonder our scripture today advises us thus: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his love endures forever”. Let the redeemed of the Lord say this, those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, this he gathered from the Lands, from the east and west, from the north and south. Some strayed in the wilderness and were lost, from the city. They wandered about hungry and thirsty, their lives ebbing away. Then, they cried out to the Lord in anguish, and he rescued them from their distress” (Verses 1 -5).
Friend, as you enter into the last month of this year, learn to thank God for whatever happened so far. Learn to complain less, rather praise more. We would be happier and God’s name will be glorified. Beloved, do you realize that some persons, perhaps very close to you are no more; while your life is still been watched and spared by God. Let us, therefore, praise God daily for what some may call common mercies. They are called common, yet priceless that when deprived of them, man perishes. Praise the Lord today for the eyes with which you behold the beauties around you. Praise the Lord for the health of mind and body provided you by Him. Bless the Lord today for the bread he provided for you, the clothes you wear. You may not have had three meals a day or very good clothes to wear, but remember that there are human beings who are mentally sick, eat from the dustbins and dressed in tattered clothes. Let us therefore praise God for we are not cast out, regarded as hopeless or confined in prison among the guilty. Dear friend, thank God today for the freedom, for friends and family members.
Hear St. Ignatius de Loyola, “The more desperate, things seem, the more we must hope in God. When man’s aid fails, God is close at hand ”. Beloved, be hopeful and confident always of God abounding mercies, for He says, “I will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a w atered garden, like a spring of w ater, w hose waters never fail” (Isaiah 58:11). Say Amen to this because it is the plan of God for you inspite of what is happening now.
