Scripture Reading: Proverbs 30:8

If you have ever visited the major cities of the world, you will ask yourself what are these people looking for. The major city centres are places of crime, business activities and leisure. Day-in and day-out the struggle for riches or daily bread appears the major reason for the army of people you see in such places. Those who do not congregate in these places are involved in one pursuit or the other.

Sometimes this year, a young lady died in our church. One of my friends said, ‘You mean that this beautiful woman has been swallowed up by the grave? I said yes, all of us will certainly die one day. Take note, you may be the richest man in your family, village, street or church, I want you to know that you have an appointment with death. The unfortunate thing is that you do not know the time it will happen. When it happens, you will certainly close your eyes to the material things of this world. The book of Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 says, “Vanity of vanities, says the preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity. What does man gain from all his labour in which he labours under the sun?” The scripture goes further to say in Ecclesiassis 2:11, “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” Come to think of it! Why do people lie? To gain advantage, to cover a fault, sin or to pretend to be innocent! Did you know that the bible says all liars shall have their part in the lake of fire? (Rev. 22:14). If your conscience is not dead, do you not know that anytime you lie, it disturbs your conscience? When will you learn to stand by what you did or say? You may lie to cover an act, remember the Lord does not sleep, and his stamp is in your soul. Never give the devil an opportunity to teach you the tricks of lying.

Ecclesiastes 12:13b-14 concludes the whole matter: “Here is the conclusion of the whole matter, fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”
