Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:33
“…He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the kingdom of God your primary concern.” (NLT)
There is a lordship contest over the life of every man, and most often we summarily conclude that this contest is between God and Satan. Rightly so, yet Satan never comes as Satan to lure men to himself, he always comes in disguise. The devil’s most effective and powerful tool to claim lordship over the lives of men is, Mammon.
Jesus, in Matthew 6:24, talks about the two masters that a man must submit to and serve; God or Mammon. “Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.” This gives one the impression that every man on earth, submits to and serves, by compulsion, one of these two masters. Every man by his values and priorities in life, is a servant of any one of these two masters. This implies that the major competitor against God for the lordship over men’s heart is Mammon.
Jesus, aware of this major competitor and its primary means of gaining control over the hearts of men, reveals to us the only way not to fall prey of this seductive lord and task master. “Take no thought of your lives, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet of your body, what you shall put on… but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…” Beloved, looking at this instruction of our Lord Jesus, it reveals that the thoughts that drive a man to pursue Mammon, are the thoughts of the necessary needs of life and the needs of the body.
Anyone who is occupied daily with and working to satisfy these two needs; the needs of life and the needs of the body, will unwittingly serve and live for Mammon. Thus, the Master says; “Take no thought…” Unless you clearly understand and prayerfully follow this command, you will discover at the end that, all that you have pursued and lived for and served, was Mammon. According to one Christian writer, the prince of this age has presented the service of Mammon as the only solution to our basic life and body needs. And the world system has used this weapon to threaten and intimidate many believers to submit and serve Mammon. The major concern in the hearts of most believers as they go about the day is the pressing needs of life, what to eat, and what to wear and how to survive. In the face of the present economic challenges in the nation, there is a constant fear in men’s heart as they face each day. There is a desperation to make ends meet, to meet the financial demands that confront us each day, and in the bid to survive, a believer may begin to live each day for Mammon.
Beloved for whom are you living? What drives you on each day? Is it to make ends meet, or maybe to earn a living? We as believers are not supposed to “earn” our living. Life has already been won over for us at the resurrection, and Jesus desires to give it to us freely. Psalms 127:2 tells us the vanity of laboring to make ends meet and striving to earn a living. Except God does it for you, you will do it wrongly and in vain.
Beloved, here is the deal, provision for our daily needs is God’s own work and He will not resign from doing it. He knows all about them and He is faithful to keep His own end of the deal. Our own heart preoccupation each day should be how to live for Him and to expand His righteousness wherever we find ourselves without compromise. Your needs must not make you compromise your faith; it doesn’t worth it! Why not focus on your part of the deal?
