Scripture Reading:  1 Thessalonians 5:5-6

The concept of sleeping is good for the mind and body but there is an area in our lives in which sleeping is not allowed; it is in our spiritual lives.  The subject – Commerce – has a topic called “Partnership”, and under different types of partnership, there is the “sleeping partner.”  The “Sleeping partner” is defined as one who does not take active part in the day to day running of the business of an organization.  From this definition it is obvious that the non-activity of the partner is what made him be termed “sleeping”.  In the same vein, sleeping is a state of dormancy concerning the things of God.  At dormant level, all the spiritual activities, exercises and disciplines that make us grow in God are lacking and this opens opportunities for the devil;  serious opportunities at that. Dear child of God, sleeping in the spirit exposes us to many types of dangers and threats to our spirituality. The first danger is the danger of inactivity. This is the state where a child of God is not making any exploits spiritually.  At the state of inactivity, you can easily be harassed or attacked by Satan. For the fact that the victim is inactive and immature, such attacks are viewed as normal; while Satan wrecks great havoc in the life of such a person. At the state of inactivity, the victim does nothing but the enemy does something.  It is high time believers realized the danger of “sleeping.”  In Judges 16:19, this is what Delilah did. “Delilah lulled Samson to sleep on her lap and then called a man, who cut off Samson’s seven locks of hair.  Then she began to torment him, for he had lost his strength.  Then she shouted, Samson!  The Philistines are coming!  He woke up and thought, “I’ll get loose and go free, as always.  He did not know that the Lord had left him. The case of Samson is a typical example of inactivity.  Are you still sleeping?  Sleeping can make the devil to do his worst. Proverbs 6:4 warns, “Don’t let yourself go to sleep or even stop to rest.” The second danger associated with sleeping in our Christian life is that it is a sign of spiritual weakness.  This is one of the tactics of Satan. He ensures that believers are snared with ‘satanic sleeping drugs’.  Have you ever observed that it is the moment you want to pray that sleep becomes more interesting; you feel very sleepy and just unable to continue with your prayer plans for that day.  Beloved in Christ, “sleep” is used to weaken the praying zeal of a child of God.  Look at the apostles, they were with Jesus on a matter of life or death at Gethsemane and they were attacked with weakness in the form of sleep. “Then He returned to the three disciples and found them asleep; and He said to Peter,How is it that you three were not able to keep watch with me even for one hour.” (Matt. 26:40) Weakness coming to us in form of sleep can make one not spend quality time with the Lord.  Weakness can make one not commune effectively with God since prayer is the only medium through which we relate and communicate with God.  Prayer is very essential to man and that is why the enemy would not allow us to relate with our God in complete alertness.  Is your prayer life endangered by sleep? Romans 13:11 advises us thus, “You know that the time has come for you to wake up from sleep.”  Dear Child of God, virtually every Christian is battling with this attack of sleep only those who are alert emerge victoriously to a fruitful prayer life. The third reason why we should wake up is revealed by   Rev. Fr. Stephen Njoku in his book entitled “While Everyone was sleeping. He says, “Each time a minister sleeps; each time a parish is in bed, the enemy sows his nasty weed; and what a subtle irritant they can be.” Each time a Christian community or a prayer group sleeps; each time a business enterprise sleeps, the enemy sows.  Each time an individual Christian is sleeping, the enemy is sowing evil in his heart or thought or mind or life etc.” For us to remain awake, we must be conscious of what happens to us in the spiritual realm. Our spiritual eyes must be opened to see whatever the devil does, our spiritual intelligence must be sound enough to understand all the devices of the devil and finally our prayer lives must be effective enough to stop Satan’s mission to kill, steal and destroy. (John 10:10a) “Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake utter a song,” (Judges 5:12a).
