Scripture Reading: Revelation 3:1-3
Yesterday the Holy Spirit led us to see the many ways that sleeping should not be welcomed as a believer. Psalms 121:4 reveals to us that “The protector of Israel never dozes or sleeps.” Sleeping is not in the attribute of God, why then are the children of God sleeping? Rev. Fr. Stephen Njoku also wondered when he said, “Why does sleep overtake everybody this way, when they need to watch and pray, and only the enemy is awake, waiting for that inevitable dark moment of stupor to sow?” There is no reason we should be asleep because our Father does not sleep. Do you observe that every human sleeps? In other words, sleeping is an activity that is common to man; that every being does, this is the reason the devil uses it as a tool to launch an attack on the children of God. So being aware of what the devil is doing with sleep (always dragging us down to a state of spiritual inactivity), we are called to “WAKE UP”! Dear child of God waking up is the message; we must wake up because flies cannot perch on a hot stove. We must wake up because the devil goes to and fro looking for whom to devour especially after the fierce battles you had with him and his agents during the just concluded 21 days fasting. We must wake up because most of the battles are done at midnight. How then can we stop sleeping? The first step is to overcome spiritual ignorance. So many Christians do not understand the need to live a life in the spirit. Most Christians do not find any meaning to the call to operate in the spirit. Operating in the spirit in the most uncomplicated definition means to be committed to God in such a way that the devil will have no opportunity to toil with you. This can be achieved by allowing the Holy Spirit to be at work in your life (Rom. 8:5-6) This is what Tim Lahaye described as the Spirit-controlled life. A situation where you know when the devil has struck, or want to strike and you know what to do. It is exercising the dominion you have as a child of God at any given point in time. So the first step to stop sleeping is to have a committed time of prayer with God. This is the time you have agreed with your Father to commune with Him. He knows the time and once it is the time, the Father comes down to relate with you. Dear Child of God, develop the desire and longings of meeting God in prayer. This kind of meeting creates a relationship that when you have not come to be with God in prayers it will be as if something is missing in you. Another way to wake up is to engage in midnight prayers. Many things take place at midnight, so as much as your strength can carry, engage in midnight prayers regularly. Hear what happened with Paul and Silas, “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose.” (Acts 16:25-26, NIV) Serious spiritual warfare takes place at midnight. Paul and Silas were rescued from the prison because they engaged God at midnight prayer. One good thing about midnight prayers is that it makes our spirit to be active such that as you are sleeping it is only your mind and body that assumes the natural sleep but your spirit is awake. Do not be so carried away by sleep that you would never be responsive to transactions that transpire in the spirit realm. If your spirit is alive, your spirit keeps the battle on, even as you sleep. We cannot afford to be sleeping, it is costing us much, a lot of spiritual casualties abound. Many agents of Satan operate freely because we are no longer flames of fire because of sleeping. Hebrews 1:7 says, “…his servants flames of fire.” Another way we should wake up is to feed the spirit with rich foods. Give your spirit balance spiritual diet. Spiritually sleeping is an indication of deficiency of the necessary spiritual nutrients. Read spiritual books, listen to spiritual talks both in Christian gatherings and through cassettes, study the Bible, etc. A Catholic priest was narrating how he got to become very much awake in the spirit; he stated among other things that he listens to Christian cassettes preached by great and sound preachers, reads a lot of spiritual books and studies his Scriptures meditatively constantly. Never neglect any spiritual exercise that will help you to grow spiritually. The more we feed the body without balancing the food we give to both the spirit and the body, we will continue to sleep. Do not allow the body to be well-fed while the spirit is dying of hunger. You cannot afford to be enjoying physical sleep to the detriment of spiritual reawakening. In the Christian race, there is no room for dormancy, there is no time allotted to “sleep”. The Master Jesus Christ says to you this day, “…What I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”
