Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1-26 b
St. Paul writing to the Corinthians church in our lead scripture today says, “When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. AH of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.” (Verse 26b) So the ancient landmark of the church’s service should include words; worship and gifts of the Holy Spirit. In Verse. 1, St. Paul says, “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts”. For three and half years, the Lord trained his apostles in the word; a church strong in the word, but without the power of Pentecost was not enough. Hence, he instructed them to tarry in Jerusalem until they have been clothed with power from on high. St. Paul, therefore, confirmed the mind of Christ when he said to the Christians in Thessalonians, “For our gospel came not unto you in word onlv, but also in power; and in the Holy Ghost” (1 Thess. 1:5 KJV).
Today, it seems that some churches are replete (full and operate) with men’s wisdom, while God, the owner is abandoned or at best relegated. A church operating on the ancient landmarks of the word and the full complements of the gifts and power of the Holy Ghost, surely will lead people to the full knowledge of God. Such worshippers were bound to develop and anchor their faith in the person of Jesus Christ not on ‘Priests or Pastors’. Hear Prophet Hosea, “My people perish for lack of knowledge”. The question is knowledge of what? I think that believers lack the knowledge of the power they possess as children of God. This lack stems from the fact that the right and ancient landmarks of our faith have been relegated and men’s wisdom and human invention are the ‘spiritual food’ on which worshippers feed. For instance, a church leader who doubts divine healing, that God has the capacity, capability and audacity to heal cannot lead worshippers. Such leaders believe that divine healing only happened during the apostolic times when Jesus moved on the face of the earth. They lack the knowledge of the words that say, “I am the Lord that heals thee” (Exo. 15:26). Psalm 103:2-
“Praise the Lord my soul, and forget not his benefits, who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases”.“With his stripe we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Philippians 2:9 – 10 says, “Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him a name above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven or on earth and under the earth” (This includes diseases).
These church leaders may know that words such as these exist, but unfortunately lack the faith to believe that they are active and can change situations when applied rightly and in the right spiritual atmosphere. Leaders of this nature fill these spiritual gaps or vacuum with what he thinks, (human knowledge, education, and philosophies of life). Beloved, the word of God is active and contains life. Whenever it is applied in the right manner and correct dose, it works wonders. Reason being that Jesus Christ is the spoken word of God. In churches of this nature, worshippers including their leaders grope in darkness, unbelief, and poor knowledge of Christ. They are like Philip who asked the Lord “Show us the Father.” Churches like this lack the golden ancient landmarks and timeless boundary pillar on which the body of Christ was formed. The scripture says Jesus still heals the sick today and so do not allow this ancient landmark to slip off our churches. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8).
