Scriptural Passage: Deuteronomy 30:15-19
What a wonderful day the Lord has made! Today, the Holy Spirit wants us to make right choices in life. I have discovered so far in life that the choices we make greatly affect our lives. These choices are usually tending either towards good or evil, life or death, righteousness or sin, sadness or happiness, success or failure etc. Verse 15 of today’s reflection says: “Today I am giving you a choice between good and evil; between life and death.” God created man with the gift of free will and this free will enables man make choices in life.
In our daily life, we suffer from the problem of what right choices we should make when we are at crossroads. Most of the choices we make revolve between good and evil. Making God our choice in life would certainly affect whatever we do. To make God our choice involves obeying His precepts, loving Him, listening to His voice and getting attached to Him. (Deut. 30:20) Joshua told the people of Israel, “As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” (Jos.24:15) O child of God, those who have made God their life-choice are like trees planted beside a brook, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do. (Ps.1:3) But those who choose Satan are like straw that the wind blows away. (Ps.1:4) When the apostles were faced with persecution, they did not make the wrong choice because they knew the right choice and went for it. They chose God. They preferred to suffer on account of the choice of faith they professed in Christ. Peter and other apostles replied the High priest: “We must obey God and not men.” (Acts 5:29) Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego made God their choice and preferred to lose their lives than worship the false gods. (Dan.2:17-18)Those who make God their choice, have nothing to regret. The will forever be vindicated by God.
Dear friend in Christ, we cannot make our choice of God and at the same time choose Satan. The scripture says, “You cannot serve both God and money.” (Mtt.6:24) The problem we face in life is that we have not fully made our choice of God, for we continue to shuffle between God and vanities, between good and evil. Those who have chosen rightly, though they walk in the midst of trouble, God gives life and saves them from the wrath of the foes. (Ps.138:7) So many things have taken the place of God in our lives these days. Beloved, when you choose God, you have everything. An Igbo song has the following words translated: He who holds on to God has held on to something good. Dear friends of Christ Jesus, whom do you seek? What choices have you made? Is your choice, God or Satan? Have you made Christ your personal lord and saviour? Do you still drift between God and fetish powers? Remember you cannot serve both God and wealth. Do you desire the flesh and its gratifications than the Spirit which gives life?“Flesh tends towards death, while the Spirit aims at life and peace. What the flesh seeks is against God; it does not agree, nor can it even agree with the Law of God.” (Rom.8:5-6)Hence, there is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who have made Jesus Christ their choice. (Rom.8:1)Unless you make Jesus your choice, you cannot have eternal life! St. Pope John 11 closes our reflection thus: “A man who has a hardened heart and a degenerate conscience is spiritually a sick man, even though he may enjoy the fullness of his powers and physical capacities. Everything must be done to bring him back to having a healthy soul.”
