Scripture Reading: Luke 1:50

A Christian writer cautions believers to be mindful of the four things that believers should guard as treasure: They are the fearof theGod, the regrets of hell fire, the hate for sin and the joy of Heaven. The truth is that the direction at which the world is moving makes a believer stand the risk of losing these four most precious gifts that a child of God must possess till he or she enters heaven. Attempts to replace the joy that comes from the Lord with the pleasure that comes from the world; secondly, seeking to satisfy every yearning of the unmortified self as a panacea to accepting the pains of hell; thirdly, socializing sin in other to make our souls less conscious and worried of being destroyed, and finally, taking the fear of the Lord for granted can be described as calamities facing believers of the modern age.  Let us begin with the fear of God.  The gift of the fear of God can be possessed today and can be lost tomorrow. Who would have believed that Solomon, with all his wisdom, would have cared less about the fear of God?  A Christian writer relates what happens to a soul that fears the Lord thus, :“ This gift enables a person “to avoid sin and attachment to created things out of reverence and love of God.” Primarily, this gift entails a profound respect for the majesty of God who is the supreme being. Here, a person realizes his “creatureliness” and dependency upon God, has a true “poverty of spirit,” and never would want to be separated from God, who is love. As such, this gift arouses in the soul a vibrant sense of adoration and reverence for God and a sense of horror and sorrow for sin.” Pope St. Gregory the Great taught how important the fear of God is thus: “Through the fear of the Lord, we rise to piety, from piety then to knowledge, from knowledge we derive strength, from strength counsel, with counsel we move toward understanding, and with intelligence toward wisdom and thus, by the sevenfold grace of the Spirit, there opens to us at the end of the ascent the entrance to the life of Heaven.” Beloved, the fear of God is a costly treasure, do not lose it.
