[views] | Scripture Reading:Deut. 29:29
Our scripture reading today tells us in Deuteronomy 29:29 “There are some things that the LORD our God has kept secret; but he has revealed the Law, and we and our descendants are to obey it forever”. We may be curious to know the things that the Lord our God has kept secret and hidden without first of all learning and understanding the things the Lord has laid before us. We are like little children playing under the watchful eyes of our father, and that is what we are before our God and Creator. There are certain things parents consider precious or dangerous and injurious which they keep beyond the reach of children; but guide them against those things. That is how we are before the Lord our God who knows all the pitfalls of our lives and the precious things we need for our life. We as little children are inquisitive and curious to know the secret things of God. In Exodus 20:1-17, God gave us the Ten commandments as Laws to guide and keep us in check against pitfalls in order that our relationship with him will be a father and son relationship; a relationship of love and trust. As the father keeps some things from his children, so also God keeps certain things hidden from us. The hidden things belong to him alone. One of the hidden things about the LORD Jesus is the mystery of his death and resurrection. Even as Jesus spoke to his disciples a first and a second time, they did not understand because it is a hidden mystery. St. Luke puts it this way: “Don’t forget what I am about to tell you! The Son of man is going to be handed over to the power of human beings. But the disciples did not know what this meant. It had been hidden from them so that they could not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about the matter” (Luke 11:44-45). Those who search diligently for the LORD, to them are revealed the hidden things that belong to God. We all have life and live as we have our daily life, now the life is beyond our knowledge, and that is why scripture says that our life is hidden in Christ. The formation and end of our life is a hidden mystery. It goes beyond medical research and discovery; it belongs only to the owner and giver of life. Man may have knowledge, wisdom and understanding like Solomon but hear Zophar as he admonished Job: “How I wish God would answer you! He would tell you there are many sides to wisdom; there are things too deep for human knowledge… can you discover the limits and bounds of the greatness and power of God? The sky is no limit for God, but it lies beyond your reach. God knows the world of the dead, but you do not know it”. (Job 11: 5-8). Dear friend, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, greatness, life miracles etc, all belong to God and he alone gives them out according to his will. After speaking to his disciples about the destruction of the Temple; Troubles and Persecution; The Awful Horror; The coming of the Son of man; The Lesson of the Fig Tree, they became curious and distressed and most likely the question in their hearts was “When would these events come to be?” Jesus answered and said: “It is in obeying the LORD our God in his commandments and walking with him on every department of our lives that He will reveal himself and the hidden mysteries to us. Let us conclude with the Psalmist in his words: “The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord; the earth and all who live on it are his”. (Psalm 24:1).
