Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 1:13-16

When you are thirsty, no other liquid can satisfy your thirst except water. Even if you are offered fruit juice your thirst cannot be quenched until you take liquid water. Let us today begin to thirst for holiness like we would thirst for water. Thirsting for holiness will make us desire nothing short of holiness. No wonder Psalmist thirstTHIRST FOR HOLINESSsays, “As the deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you O God. I thirst for you living God; when can I go and worship in your presence” (Psalm 42:1-2). Dear Child of God, it is His desire for us to live a holy live and holiness is nothing but operating in divine obedience. It can be summarized thus: Loving God with your mind, heart, soul and strength. When you love God with your entire mind, your reasoning produces godly results. When you love God with all your heart, the product of your thoughts will be sinless. When you love God with all your strength you will live to obey God and when you love God with your soul you will be eternally connected to the source of true righteousness. All these four aspects of our being must be surrendered to God and must be controlled by Him. When this happens it will be no longer you that live but Jesus who lives in you. This was the situation with St. Paul when he said,” It is no longer I that leave but Christ that lives in me”
Beloved, you are of God, you have been chosen by God to be His representative here on earth. When God chose the Israelites as His own, He spelt out to them what it means to be God’s people in His commandments. They must be different from other people the way they live their lives. If you are truly a child of God, there are the “dos” and the “don’ts”. Verse 5 of our scriptural reference says, “Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who called you is holy.” The way you dress, the way you eat, the way you talk and the way you handle matters generally must reflect that you have God living inside of you. Every of your action will be given out the perfume of godliness.
How then can holiness of life be sustenance? Holiness is not a year’s program; is a lifetime pursuit. Holiness is not a program for only when your life is active, holiness is not only during the period of lent. Holiness is for all times; holiness by day and holiness by night; holiness in secret and holiness in open. For this to be actualized there must be an inner craving, the unquenchable desire, this strong yearning for holiness. The desire to be holy suppresses the desire to be sinful. The cravings for righteousness inhibit the cravings for unrighteousness. Anything that suppresses the craving for holiness is dangerous to your spiritual health. Proverbs 4:23-24 admonishes us thus:” Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words”. To be a child of God means the child of the Holy One. Naturally our hearts crave for a lot of things like getting the best girl for marriage, getting the best husband, living for over hundred years and still healthy, graduating with a First Class, becoming a successful businessman amongst others but top on the list should be the desire to be holy as the Lord wants.
Finally, Dear User of Daily Strength, during this period of Lent and always, the Lord wants you to desire holiness of life. If that craving is lacking in you develop it. Keep your desire like St. Augustine who declared, “My soul rests not until it rests in the Lord”.
Prayer Points:
Thank God for another bright new day. I worship you, I praise you and I glorify.
O Lord, help me to exclaim with my life, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and who is and who is come.”
O Lord, revive my cravings to be holy all the days of my life.
Every power working against my striving towards holiness, destroyed by fire in Jesus name.
Take meditatively the prayer of St Pio for the next one week.
Exercise: Do not let a minute pass you by without thinking of holiness.
