Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 17:14-16
In our world today, there are so many things speaking to us. As you switch on your television set or radio, you hear what people are saying. Visit your doctor he is saying one thing or the other about your health. What about your neighbours, they are saying something. Most times all these messages bring fears, worry, anxiety, hopelessness, anger, hatred, disunity, war and strife. But I want to join the Psalmist in Psalm 85:8, to announce to you that: “I am listening to what the Lord God is saying; he promises peace to us, his own people, if we do not go back to our foolish ways”. The way the world is going, if you start listening to everything that the world speaks, you break down. Some are already down with depressions, fears, sicknesses because they have gone the foolish way by not listening to what the Lord is telling them. The Lord speaks peace to His people. This is enough consolation that should encourage us. When situations are not favourable, it is the Lord who can make them favourable. We only need to have faith in the God we serve. Hear St. John Chrysostom: “As a stout staff supports the trembling limbs of a feeble man, so does faith sustain our racillating mind, lest it be tossed about by sinful hesitation and perplexity.”
In our scripture reading today, Prophet Elijah reminded the Widow of Zarephath what the Lord said, “ For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The bowl will not run out of flour or the jar run out of oil before the day that I, the Lord, send rain”. Beloved, just note something about God, for every hopeless situation around the children of God, there is always something hopeful the Lord says about it. When death threatens, the Lord says “You shall not die but live”, when sickness strikes, the Lord said “I will heal you of all your diseases”. Most times we often believe the report of men. Some people die just on hearing the doctor’s report about their health. When Jarius daughter was sick, this is what the messengers came to say in Mark 5:35, “… “Your daughter has died, why bother the Teacher any longer.” What did Jesus say about this case, hear Him in Mark 5:36, “Jesus paid no attention to what they said, but told him,“Don’t be afraid, only believe”.
So many things are preventing us from hearing the voice of the Lord speaking to our situations, some of them include; lack of faith, doubt, fear, unforgiveness, wickedness, impurity of heart and body, pride, worldly pursuits, disobedience to the word of God. Beloved you can really hear the Lord’s voice, make out time for the Lord, engage the Lord in quiet time and practise an active prayer life. James 4:8a says, “Come near to God, and he will come near to you”. Come closer to Him, you will discover that He is kind, merciful, loving and full of compassion.
- Lord show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy and at your right hand are pleasures forever more (pray)
- Lord, remove everything within me that prevents me from hearing from you.
- Let every hopeless situation in my life be revived in Jesus name.
- Lord, I believe in what you have said concerning my situation.
- Pray for all members of the Daily Strength family now that are scared because of the doctor’s report on them
Exercise: Revive the exercise of having quiet time.
