Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:1-4
Welcome to today’s reflection. Today the good Lord wants to teach us about the right attitude towards giving. He wants to enlighten us about the kind of giving that attracts God’s blessings. Today, giving to God and to the needy have been so publicized that people would not want to give except some form of recognition and praise is attached. I was just going through a newspaper, I saw a picture in a weekly newspaper of a church showing a gift of some foodstuff to a religious organization and accessing the quantity of the food items; it is not worth the publicity given to it. God desires that we give and not publicize it; even though our self-ego wants us to be recognized and be praised for this laudable act of giving. Verse 2 of our Bible reference states, “So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.” What is the benefit of man’s praise? God is the one who needs to appreciate us. Today publicity giving is fast becoming a culture. The reason why you must not advertise your charity and donation is because you have been sent by God; he provides the resources, the energy and the opportunity. You have been sent to extend a helping hand to your church or to a person in need. The good Lord says, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” (Deut. 8:18 NIV) When you remember that the wealth you have is given to you by God you will only but say, “……… ‘We are ordinary servants; we have only done our duty.” (Luke 17:10)
Dear child of God, give to gain grace, the Bible says that even your closest friend should not know about the charity which you did. It is very serious. If we cultivate this habit of giving to God without actually making it known, you will be amazed at the blessings of God that will follow you. Let us today humbly sort out what help we can render to the church, to our neighbours and extend such help on anonymity. Mother Theresa said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” Let us not become hypocritical about giving because we are giving to the Lord. He knows everything. He is the Best Person that should appreciate us.
- Thank the Lord for His word today.
- Ask the good Lord to bless us so that we will be able to give to the Church and the needy.
- Pray for people who would not give unless their giving is publicized.
- Pray for people who are charitable that God will enlarge their coasts.
- Pray for all Daily Strength Charity Groups all over the world that the good Lord assists them to grow in zeal and determination to help the needy.
Exercise: Begin today to practise secret giving.
Memory Verse: 2 Samuel 24:24.
