Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:10
I am sure that Prophet Jeremiah was reflecting on today’s topic when he had this outburst of lamentation in Jeremiah 6:13, “Everyone, great and small, tries to make money dishonestly; even prophets and priests cheat people.” The pursuit of money has brought a lot of evils such that even Christians and non-Christian alike have questions to answer. Almost no one is innocent. If innocent ones can be found, they are those who have realized the dangers associated with the love of money and have made amends. The Spirit of the Living God is asking us this personal question, “What evil has the pursuit of money led you into? Because it is the desire of the Lord to always offer us opportunities to check ourselves and have a change of heart.
Another important message to us today is the alarming rate at which this portion of the Bible is misinterpreted and many justify their quest for money based on this statement, “… but money answers everything.”(Eccl.10:19) Dear child of God, money does not answer all things, rather with money good things or bad things can come your way. St. Paul confirms this today in Acts 8:20, “But Peter answered him, “May you and your money go to hell, for thinking that you can buy God’s gift with money!” Money cannot buy forgiveness of sins, money cannot save life from an incurable disease, money cannot buy salvation or eternal life, money cannot give divine happiness, and money cannot buy miracles. The mentality that money “answereth” all things has led so many people into the devil’s trap. When you hear somebody telling you, “I cannot be poor” but obviously not doing any meaningful thing to earn a living, just be careful, the person can do anything mostly negative to make money. There is no short-cut (get-rich-quick approach) in making genuine and honest money; for we must follow God’s principles of making money. Otherwise any short-cut will cut life short.
Ananias and Sapphira were victims of the love of money, they ended in death. Have you changed an expired date of any product because you want to make money this year? Have you caused the death of somebody because of the love of money? Do you produce sub-standard products? Do you carry out sharp practices (unhealthy) in your clinics because you need to develop it to an ultra-modern hospital? Do you abuse young girls simply because you can win them with money? Dear Child of God, get rid of evil quest for money have brought into your life. St. Paul reveals an antidote of remaining contented and free from evil money in Philippians 4:11-13, “And I am not saying this because I feel neglected, for I have learnt to be satisfied with what I have. I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learnt this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. I have the strength to face all conditions by the power that Christ gives me.” If you seek God sincerely and trust Him totally, He will give you the wisdom, the ideas and the power to make wealth honestly.
- Thank the Lord for today’s reflection.
- Lord, I repent of all evils I have done against You in pursuing wealth.
- Pray for those who have been led astray by the pursuit of money that God will touch their lives for change.
- Pray for the economy of your nation, that the good Lord will transform it and give the leaders ideas to make good policies that will favour the masses.
- Pray that you will not be victim of what 1Timothy 6:9 preaches. Take seriously.
Exercise: From this day remove your hands from every shady deal, begin to pursue money making honestly, you will see the changes that will come to your life.
