Scripture Reading: 1 John 2:26-27

Beloved in Christ, let us take a deeper look at the question before us today and the scripture reading for our meditation. It is personal, not congregational and requires a thoughtful answer. “Who is your Teacher?” Hear what John says about your teachers and those who instruct you in the word and knowledge of God: “I am writing this to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But as for you, Christ has poured out his spirit on you. As long as his spirit remains in you, you do not need anyone to teach you. For his spirit teaches you about everything, and what he teaches is true, not false. Obey the spirit’s teaching, then, and remain in union with Christ” (1 Jn. 2:26-27).

St. John, warns us to beware of false teachers. As there are good teachers and instructors, there are also false teachers and instructors. Your believe and understanding of who God is depends largely on your teacher and his instructions. Many Christians have been deceived and led out of the flock of Christ by false teachers and interpreters of the law. They teach and preach one thing and do the opposite. No wonder Jesus warned us against the teachers of the law and the Pharisees who pretend to be the custodians and teachers of the law but do the other. Hear the warning of the Lord and Master: “The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees are the authorized interpreters of Moses’ Law. So you must obey and follow everything they tell you to do; do not however, imitate their actions, because they do not practice what they preach. They tie on to people’s backs loads that are heavy and hard to carry, yet they are not wiling even to lift a finger to help them carry those loads. They do everything so that people will see them” (Matt. 23:2-5a). If your teacher and master does not impart sound teaching and knowledge about the kingdom of God, the Lord warns you to beware of such teacher. It is time for true believers and worshippers to identify their true teachers.

Who then is your true and trusted teacher? Who shall you follow by words and action in the path of truth and righteousness? Jesus is the true Teacher and Master of the true believer and worshippers. Matthew tells us that Jesus is our model of Teacher, Preacher, and Healer: “Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the synagogue, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people w ho had all kinds of disease and sickness. The new s about him spread through the whole country of Syria ..?” (Matt. 4:23- 24).His word cannot be stopped by any power or quenched by any force because he is the WORD which he shares to the world that they may be saved and live eternally. Your teacher Jesus, comforts and strengthens you in his word. He has poured out his spirit on you as he teaches and preaches, and as long as his spirit remains in you, you come under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit to teach and lead you into all truth. This is the promise he has made to them that believe in him: “I w ill ask the Father and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit who reveals the truth about God”. (John 14: 16-17a). Some of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit are: (1) Teacher (2) Helper (3) Advocate (4) Truth (5) Revelation. These are the qualities of a true teacher. The Lord has poured his spirit the promise of the Father on you to teach, help, counsel and lead you into all truth and reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven to you. Friend in Christ, do not be deceived by false teachers and preachers who may come to you with words of eloquence but hidden in them is deceit. He is the Way, the truth and the Life (Jn. 14:6). He can never deceive you; neither can he lead you astray. As he pours his spirit on you, bring before him your problems and worries that he may help you. Consult him that he may counsel you. Open your heart to him that you may hear the truth and the truth will set you free. Abide in him that he may reveal the mysteries of creation, salvation and the kingdom of heaven to you. Only Jesus Christ can do all these by the power of the Holy Spirit in you.
