Scripture Reading: Luke 1:34-37

Today we begin the GREAT MARIAN NOVENA to mark the 10th anniversary of DSD, with the theme: IT IS POSSIBLE WITH GOD. Our scripture reading narrates the encounter between Mary and Archangel Gabriel. Through this encounter, our mother Mary had a first-hand experience of God’s power to make things that were humanly impossible to become possible.

Knowing that the child she bore is God, as reported by her cousin Elizabeth in Luke 1:43, Mary already has strong faith in her son’s unlimited power to make all things possible. For this reason, it was not difficult for Mary to intercede for water to become wine in John 2:1-11. Child of God, our mother Mary has a unique and unparalleled relationship with God and intercessory /mediatrix role in the new creation/covenant. It is no coincidence that the first public manifestation of Jesus’ glory came as a result of Mary’s request. Just as the first demeaning of God’s glory in humanity came as a result of Eve’s request. As such, the early Christians echo thus “Death through Eve, life through Mary” and Mary’s obedience untied the knot of Eve’s disobedience.”

As a mother, she desires the joy and happiness of this couple on their wedding day and she will try to secure their joy. Mary then turns to our Lord Jesus Christ and tells Him that they have no more wine. Mary turns to the waiters and tells them: “Do whatever He tells you.” These were the last words recorded of Mary in the Gospel, in all of Sacred Scripture. Mary was saying to the waiter as well as to you and me, to the whole world to obey our Lord Jesus Christ in all things! “Do whatever He tells you”.

As a result of Mary’s powerful intercession, our Lord Jesus Christ performs His first public miracle at the Wedding Feast of Cana, thereby preventing a very embarrassing situation on the wedding day of this young couple. Child of God, I don’t know that expectation of Joy and hope of celebration that is about or seems to have been cut short? I don’t know the situations of things in your life, in your family and around you now? If our Mother Mary was moved to help without plea from the young couple, do you think she will refuse your cry for help even now that she is seated in the heavenly place with her Son and her God? Unite your faith to her great obedient faith in this GREAT MARIAN NOVENA, as we implore her intercession for miracles in our situations.
