(Day 20 of the Fasting and Prayer Programme)
Scripture Reading: Mark 14:36
“Abba, Father,” He said, “Everything is possible for You. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:36)
As we round off this year’s fasting programme tomorrow, the Holy Spirit says to us that we MUST submit our will to God if our prayers are to be answered. In our scripture reading today, Jesus Christ demonstrates a complete surrender to the will of His Father. He knew what was about to happen, and having been left alone by His disciples, turned totally to His Father. He says, “My father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may Your will be done.” (Matt. 26:42) At this point an Angel appeared and gave Him the power He sought to fulfil the will of His Father (Lk. 22:43). The writer of Hebrews recorded what Jesus said regarding His entry into the world: “I have come to do Your will, O God.” (Heb. 10:7)
So beloved, our purpose of praying during these 21 days is not to accomplish human will but to bring God’s will to fruition. We must see prayer as a proof of linking ourselves to God so that He can work through us. Jesus’ prayers were always answered by God because He submitted Himself to His Father through prayer. The Scripture says, “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayer and petitions with loud cries and tears to one who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His retreat submission.” (Heb. 5:7) Beloved, you can ask God for anything during this fasting programme and He will give it to you, but only if your life is submitted to Him. Based on this, all participants at this fasting programme need prayer of submission so that we can overcome temptations and sin. So often we pray for healing, wealth and other material benefits forgetting that the most important thing to ask God for is the grace to overcome sin. We shall continue tomorrow!
