Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-7
Our scriptural reference says, “As for you, my son, be strong through the grace that is ours in union with Christ Jesus. Take the teachings that you heard me proclaim in the presence of many witnesses and entrust them to reliable people.. .. Take your part in suffering, as a loyal soldier of Christ Jesus. A soldier on active service wants to please his commanding officer and does not get mixed up with the affairs of civilian life . . . .’’Beloved in Christ, the very moment you sign on as one of the soldiers of Christ Jesus, your profile is noted in the kingdom of heaven and on Lucifer’s table. The reason is that your voluntary enrolment into the army of Christ automatically makes you a threat to the kingdom of Lucifer. You become an opposing army, haven been fully equipped with the graces and weapons of heaven. From this moments, your life, activities and speech become threats to the very existence of their kingdom’s evil activities. The obvious and expected reaction is to start planning dangerous strategies and accumulation of weapons to launch an offensive against the child of God. When this happens, the child of God begins to experience some trials and temptations; but the Lord assures us in 1 John 3:8b, “The son of God appeared for this reason, to destroy w hat devil has done”. In John 16:33, Jesus Christ assures us, “ In the world ye shall have tribulations; but be of good cheers; I have overcome the world”. For the reason of the very presence of our Commanding Officer – Jesus Christ, we are not to be afraid; rather be active in all that is good; our faith and determination to showcase Jesus Christ; and his marvelous gospel wherever we go. It is in recognition of this that St. Paul writing to the Philippians said, “For to you, it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also suffer for His sake” (Philippians 129).
Dear friend in Christ, as we gradually, come to the end of this year, and preparing to walk into 2016 in fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit requires that as soldiers of Christ we must be prepared to obey certain laid down kingdom rules and regulations. We must also be prepared to employ to the full the gift(s) given to us by the Holy Spirit. As a soldier of Christ Jesus, you shall endure hardship and refuse to run away when Satan comes with his antics and deceit. As you prepare to enter 2016, a gallant soldier, the Holy Spirit presents to you, defined mission statements or rules of engagement. These rules of engagement shall keep you steadfast, focused and ready for battle at all times. St. Paul in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit itemizes the rules of engagement or mission statements for all active soldiers of Christ in Ephesians 6:10 – 23 – Be strong with the Lord’s mighty power (Verse 10). The scripture says in Rev. 5:5, “And one of the elders saith unto me, weep not; behold the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book and to lose the seven seal, thereof’. Christ, your Commanding Officer is pictured as a Lion (the king of beasts) indicating He will rule as king of all the earth. No animal comes out when the Lion roars, and that is the picture of your Commanding Officer; the one who says to you let’s go! Asa soldier of Christ therefore, you must endeavour to be strong in the righteousness of his power. “Acknowledge that your Master is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end” (Rev. 1:8, 22:13). One of your mission statements or rule of engagement, beloved, is to put on this mighty power of the Lord, your Commanding Officer. “Put on all God’s armour so that you w ill be able to stand firm against all the strategies and tricks of the devil” (Verse 11).
Beloved, haven enlisted into the army of the Lord, you are bound to be engaged in spiritual conflict with Satan. This spiritual conflict is known as ‘a war of faith’ (2 Cor. 10:4,1 Tim 1:18- 19). This war of faith continues until we enter the life to come (2 Tim. 4:7 – 8). Knowing our status and who our Commanding Officer is, Satan the evil master strategist would often seek our downfall by his various schemes. We shall continue tomorrow.
