Scripture Reading: Ezekiel 37:1-14
By the power of the Holy Spirit, Ezekiel had the power to see the dry bones in the valley. The bones represent the whole house of Israel in exile whose hope had died. They were dispersed among heathen people and were forced to eat “Satan’s food.” V.3 of our scriptural reference says, “Son of man, can these bones live? And I (Ezekiel) answered “O LORD GOD, you know.”Ezekiel was very right when he said that only the Lord was capable of turning dead bones to living ones. In the valley of life, many things happen. It is in the valley of life Christians experience decay or stagnation in their spiritual life. It is in the valley that sad experiences of fierce attacks of Satan are recorded. This is so because in the valley, the Christian seems to have lost all the protective coatings due to sin and loss of friendship with God.
So the valley of bones therefore describes Christians who have lost stem and perhaps are living in totally shattered relationship with God. Many Christians and prominent men of God are in this state. They have become so dry spiritually that they are almost extinguished. The people of Israel, as is noticed today, even among Christians had been idolatrous and forgotten how the Lord rescued them from Egypt and for forty years guided them through the desert. They had forgotten how the Lord provided water and food when they asked for same in the desert. They resorted to a life of sexual pervasion, political wickedness, gossips and worship of strange gods. Today, many are living in this same valley decorated with dry bones and attempts to come out have proved hard. Hear this, “I have this challenge since when I was a child, till date. The problem is that I masturbate; though a virgin I have prayed for a long time for it to stop, but to no avail. What do I do Sir?”
Beloved in Christ, the situation in our environment and
church is quite alarming. Many are alive physically but spiritually dead and dry. The scripture says that such persons do not have life in them (1 John 5:12), because they do not have the Son of God. The sad consequences of situations of this nature manifest in lack of peace, sickness, no jobs, corruption, poverty, disintegrated family life, broken marriages, stagnation and unrighteous living; many unfulfilled dreams, unpleasant situations such as deaths. Some people are pushed almost to the state of despair and confusion. This poor spiritual state gives Satan, the devil, the opportunity to afflict victims with weakness and hatred for things of God. They are badly compromised and God’s glory on them is blurred. It is in this valley situation that destines are changed and fortunes destroyed. What a terrible thing to dwell in the valley as dry bones? However, the Lord says to us today, “I am going to breathe into you and bring you back to life. I will put breath inside you and bring you back to life.” (Vs 7 —8).
Beloved in Christ, don’t fret or despair over your present situation. The Lord, God has arisen for you. You only need to rise up like a smart soldier and turn your gaze completely to the outstretched hand of God. This hand beckons on you to come out of the valley and receive life. For Jesus says, “Indeed, the water that I will give him will be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:14b)
