Scripture Reading: James 4:4
Today, our Lord Jesus Christ wants to open our eyes to one of the dangerous trends in our lives as Christians. Many children of God are getting trapped and entangled without even sensing the danger in what they are doing. The Lord speaks to us today that our intimacy with the world is costing us our friendship with God. God and His children have this unbreakable bond of relationship. The way God created us, we are bound to cling to Him just as man clings to his wife and they become one; that is why marriage is usually used by Christ to show the relationship between the Lord and His people.
Ezekiel 16:18 says: “As I passed by again, I saw that the time had come for you to fall in love. I covered your naked body with my coat and promised to love you. Yes, I made a marriage covenant with you, and you became mine.” This is what the Sovereign Lord says.”
Our scripture reading began with the phrase “unfaithful people”. The Lord is not happy about how we have left Him and get attached to the world. Beloved in Christ, the world does not mean the universe which God created but those things that contradict what God has said or even challenge the sovereignty of our God. 1 John 2:15-16 has this to say about the world, “Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world. If you love the world, you do not love the Father. Everything that belongs to the world- what the sinful self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of – none of this comes from the Father; it comes from the world.” John tries to paint a picture of what the world is like in the following phrases “what the sinful self desires”, “what people see and want” “everything in this world that people are so proud of.” These things distance us from the Father, because it makes us to crave with our flesh rather than desiring God. Beloved in Christ, there is a serious danger inherent in becoming God’s enemy, because enmity with God means you have distanced yourself from God. You have decided to go your own way, that was exactly what the prodigal son did. He decided to go away from the Father because of the world’s attractions and glory, and rather than find joy and fulfillment, he found emptiness and deceptions. This is exactly what happens to us when our thoughts and actions are centred on the world and its content.
Dear friend in Christ, take a personal audit of your relationship with God, how far have you strayed, the Lord speaks to your heart today. RETURN. Just like the prodigal son, come back to your understanding and take the bold step that the prodigal son took, “So he got up and started back to his father.” (Luke 15:19)
- Ask God to pardon you for breaking your relationship with Him.
- Ask God to give you the grace not to be drawn away by the attractions of this world.
- Pray against the spirit of worldliness in Pastors, Priest and the Religious.
- Lord, help me to understand that my life is useless without You.
- Lord, I promise to be your friend from now on.
- Pray for all Christian believers who have gone their own ways to return to God.
Exercise: Resume those things you used to do before that glorifies God’s name.
